2 Guns (Movie Review) – Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg are a great team, but they deserve better than this

By Benjamin Lane

2 Guns. 2013. Run time: 109 mins. MPAA: R (for violence throughout, language, and brief nudity). Starring: Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg, Paula Patton, Bill Paxton, George Furla, and Ross Richie. Written by Blake Masters. Directed by Baltasar Kormakur.

Denzel Washington is the freaking man. He has been the freaking man for many years. I thought he gave one of the best performances of his career in 2012’s Flight. Mark Wahlberg is rapidly becoming the freaking man. As far as action movies go, I was one of the few that actually dug Contraband; as far as comedies go, he was awesome in The Other Guys and actually fantastic in Ted, and if you’ve seen Ted I know you know you know what I mean; and as far as other movies go, he was great in The Fighter and both hilarious and intimidating in his only Oscar nominated performance in Martin Scorsese’s The Departed. So, having these two team up is something that could be absolutely awesome. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.

Denzel and Wahlberg have some good good chemistry, but it’s just not enough to make you care. The story is average, nothing horrible and nothing even hard to get through, but it’s just not as compelling as one would hope. Director Baltasar Kormakur (Contraband) does okay, but nothing special. I really can’t explain what this movie is and why it isn’t that good. I laughed quite a bit, I really enjoyed quite a bit of the movie, but I just left the theater undecided on my final reaction. The more you think about it, the more forgettable it becomes.

FINAL VERDICT: I really can’t say much more about 2 Guns. It’s just a lousy experience. It’s certainly not a bad film, but it’s just not as entertaining, violent, or engrossing as one would expect from a team up of Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg. It does provide laughs, some awesome action, and good performances, but it just doesn’t hit the way it should. (C+)
